LIP-TIE & TONGUE-TIE

WHAT IS A FRENECTOMY?

A frenectomy is a simple procedure to release tight tissue under the tongue or lip. It’s great for breastfeeding moms and babies. Sometimes babies are born with tongue-tie or lip-tie, which can make breastfeeding tricky, very painful for moms, and seemly impossible. These issues can also affect dental health, speech, and digestion.

As children grow, untreated tongue-tie or lip-tie can lead to problems like difficulty speaking clearly, dental decay, or spacing issues. In adolescence and adulthood, these conditions may contribute to social anxiety, difficulty with certain oral activities, or even sleep apnea.

If left untreated in adults, tongue-tie or lip-tie can result in ongoing challenges with speech articulation, difficulty with certain oral functions like licking or playing musical instruments, and in severe cases, may even lead to issues with swallowing or breathing properly. However, a timely frenectomy procedure can alleviate these problems and improve overall quality of life.

LINGUAL FRENECTOMY

Tongue-tie is a condition where a piece of tissue under the tongue, left over from when your baby was growing in the womb, restricts normal tongue movement. This can make it difficult for them to breastfeed properly, leading to challenges with latching and sometimes causing them to have trouble gaining weight.

One way to fix this is through a Laser Lingual Frenectomy. Instead of traditional cutting or burning methods, this procedure uses special light energy to remove the tight tissue. It’s less painful and there’s hardly any bleeding. Plus, because lasers help gum tissue grow back faster, your child will heal quickly.

After the surgery, it’s important to do stretches to keep the tongue moving smoothly. This will help your child eat, talk, and develop properly.

LIP-TIE FRENECTOMY

“Parents, it’s important to be aware of upper lip-tie, a condition where the upper lip is tightly attached to the gums, affecting infants, adolescents, and adults alike. In newborns, this can lead to breastfeeding difficulties due to restricted lip movement. As your child grows, an undiagnosed lower lip-tie can cause speech and dental issues.

By recognizing the signs early and seeking professional evaluation and treatment, you can support your child’s oral health and overall well-being throughout their life journey.”
